7 Helpful Tips For New Notaries

    1. Check the names on the documents to make sure the name on the order is the same name on the documents BEFORE you print anything. I learned the hard way….
    2. (╯︵╰,)
    3. Compare the Borrower’s To/From amount in the ALTA Settlement Statement & Closing Disclosure. If the amounts are different verify which should be used.
    4. I like to show the ALTA and Closing Disclosure documents to the signers first. The Note, Deed of Trust, and Notice of Right to Cancel (if applicable) are shown next.  I keep them in order using stickies, so that I know where they go because I like to return the documents in the order they were sent to me.
    5. If there is a Letter of Explanation or other typed letter with the borrower’s name, have them wet sign those letters.
    6. Keep a note somewhere with the FedEX and UPS last drop pickup times for those locations near you that you will be using often.
    7. Printer tip for the maximum toner usage (NOTE: This may work with other printers, but this is specific to the Brother HL-L6200):
      • Open and remove the toner cartridge;
      • Press Cancel & Secure buttons simultaneously;
      • Click OK & then the up arrow.
      • Replace the toner and you should get more pages printed from the almost empty cartridge.
    8. Things to ask the signer on the confirmation call:
      • Verify the date and time
      • Verify the location and if they request a different one, make sure you confirm before driving out that that is where you have agreed to meet. ***rant alert*** The signer swears she left a message on my phone. No message…
      • (⇀‸↼)
      • Ask if there is parking available on street or nearby. They rarely volunteer this info.
      • If you don’t have the documents yet, let them know they may need 2 forms of ID and provide a copy if they can. If they cannot provide one,  I let them know that I can upload the copies directly to the portal from my phone. This way they are aware and if they have any problems with this they will usually provide the photocopies.
